Things To Do In New Zealand – Watching Fur Seal Pups Playing

I have been browsing some photos and came across this one of a colony of New Zealand Fur seals and thought I might tell you about my experiences with these guys.

This particular photo was taken at a very popular viewing location, Ohau Point, on the Kaikoura Coast just north of kaikoura. It is a regular stop for all the tour coaches and those who are in the know. Even though I have stopped here many times I always enjoy watching the antics of the seals.

Sometimes the pups are playing chasing each other around the rock pools while the mature males are fast asleep in the sun. On my last stop here, there were a couple of reasonable sized seals playing in the surf of the incoming tide.

Just before this viewing point, heading south, there is a couple of car parks
on either side of the road and tucked into the bush is a track that follows the Ohau stream up a ways, where during the months of about June to September a large number of pups make their way up to a waterfall and swimming hole, where they spend all day playing. Check this YouTube video post out it’s awesome.

Of late this has become an extremely popular spot for visitors and is causing some concern to the Department of Conservation. Most days they have a conservation officer there. When you visit this location please be very much aware that it is a natural setting and you need to be very careful as you make your way up the track, it is not uncommon for the seal pups to be on the walking track or at least very close by. Also remember this is state highway 1 and the main road to Christchurch, so extreme caution should be used when crossing the road.

things to do in new zealandA year or so ago we stopped over night on one of the many park-over spots on the Kaikoura coast, ideal locations for campervan holidays in New Zealand. In the morning we awoke to a pod of Dolphin’s making their way up the coast, turned and went back down the coast again. In my rush to photograph them I didn’t notice a club of male fur seals that blended into the rocks and all of a sudden there I was up close and REAL personal.

New Zealand fur seals are a very common sight at a number of locations along  the Kaikoura coast while finding things to do in New Zealand.

Hi thanks for the comment, I did design this site my self and must admit I have not done a lot to it latley.

The theme was from Atristeer, which I found to be a good starting block.

Cheers
